The challenge

Two problem statements, one deep frontier

Collect polymetallic nodules from 4,500–6,000 m — with or without a vertical riser. Select a statement to explore what you'd be building.

Problem Statement I

Development of mining system with Innovative Impact less Nodule Collection System with Vertical Riser Transport

The conventional deep-sea mining architecture employs a tracked seabed collector coupled with a vertical riser and lifting system that transports nodules hydraulically or mechanically to a surface support vessel. While technically mature compared to other concepts, significant challenges remain in Collector efficiency, Sediment management, Hydraulic transport efficiency, Energy consumption, Reliability, System weight, Deployment logistics and Environmental footprint.

Under India's Deep Ocean Mission, NIOT is engineering the crewed submersible and the seabed machines that will explore the abyssal plains of the Central Indian Ocean — where polymetallic nodules rich in cobalt, nickel and rare earths rest under crushing pressure and perpetual dark.

Technothon 2026 opens that engineering frontier to you. Design the sensors, the sustainable collectors, the navigation and the life-support that make responsible deep-sea exploration possible.
